Corona...the Vaccine

One of the leading matters being discussed right now regarding the Corona Virus is the emergence of a Vaccine.  President Trump is predicting that a Vaccine should be available by the end of October or the beginning of November.  Dr. Fauci is also optimistic and he predicts that a Corona Virus Vaccine which will be, to use his exact words, ,,Safe and Effective'' would be available by the beginning of the year (2021).

The question which neither one of them, or anyone else is addressing is, what constitutes the definition of ,,Safe and Effective,'' to use, again, Dr. Fauci's words.

We were taught and generally it is accepted, that such words need to be quantified in some way or another.

For example, ,,Safe.'' how safe?  100% safe?  90% safe?  80% safe?  50% safe?  How does Dr. Fauci exactly describe safe, or, more precisely, how does he quantify it?  Many Vaccines are safe, but some are more safe than others.  Some Vaccines are considered by certain people, including medical professionals not to be safe.  Indeed, not very long ago, not very long ago at all, there was a raging debate in some States whether vaccination of children for certain types of flu can be compulsory.  Many parents were (and still are) opposed to having their children vaccinated against the flu.  Many adults are.  Many people intentionally avoid being vaccinated against the flu and/or other types of communicable diseases.  We are entitled to know from Dr. Fauci, not just Dr. Fauci, but anyone and everyone else who is involved in the development of these Vaccines as to how safe the Corona Vaccine would be, not in general, vague terms, but specifically, using numbers, using percentages.

Let's set aside safety aside for a moment.  How about effectiveness?  Dr. Fauci says that the Corona Virus will be ,,Effective.''  Again, the word ,,Effective'' is a vague concept.  How effective?  100% effective?  80% effective?  50% effective?  40% effective?  Again, nobody appears to want to come forward and answer these questions.  Are these questions important?  We would like each to consider the answer to that question for oneself, but here are the facts we know.  No Vaccine is 100% effective.  That fact is disputed by no one.  Some Vaccines, not many, not many at all, can be as high as 80% or 90% effective.  Such Vaccines are considered exceptionally good.  Many Vaccines are far less effective, some, as low as 40% or 30%.  Dr. Fauci himself stated that a Corona Virus Vaccine might be 50% effective.  That doesn't sound like a very impressive number, but even at 50%, it raises more questions than it answers.

Again, we would like to go to CDC numbers to which we had alluded earlier and which were published through 17 June 2020.  As we stated earlier, 80% of Corona Virus fatalities have been 65 years old or older through that period.  90% of Corona Virus fatalities were 55 years old or older.  Corona Virus fatalities for infants and children were statistically insignificant.

More importantly, the CDC figures further show that 94% of the Corona Virus fatalities succumbed with co-morbidities.  That, we find an awful statistic.  In analyzing that statistic, it further shows that at least through 17 June 2020, the total number of people who died in the United States of the Corona Virus under the age of 55 and who had no co-morbidities was less than 200.

So, to us, a logical question would be, what is the effectiveness of the Corona Virus Vaccine for people who are over 65, and/or over 55, or at any age, for that matter, who are suffering from another disease which would result in a co-morbidity, in the event that person contacts or is infected with the Corona Virus.  Dr. Fauci does not answer that question.  Nobody is answering that question.  And that would be a very, very, very important question, as the total number of deaths caused by the Corona Virus (and co-morbidities), is now approaching 200,000 in the United States alone.

All this is going on, without any serious concern, so far as we can discern, how much sanitary conditions in Rest Homes and Hospitals might have something to do with Corona Virus fatalities.

Also, given the severity of this epidemic, there is very little effort in the United States, one could almost say, token effort, towards ,,Therapeutics,'' in plain English, drugs, towards treating those who become infected with this horrendous disease, especially when it comes to elderly people and, more specifically, elderly people who are suffering from another threatening condition.

We have mentioned several of these ,,Therapeutics,'' a less fancy word for that would be drugs, which have been dismissed one after another, or, as is the case with Remdesivir, really, not given the importance that it would seem to deserve, given the dire situation concerning fatalities.  Equally, there has been no enthusiasm on embarking on progress made in other countries, through various methods, Favipiravir in Japan, now being used in numerous other countries, and containing methods such as Herd Immunity.  We may not know how effective those things may be, although we suspect that there is a great deal of information already out there, but to hang on to meaningless catchphrases, such as ,,Gold Standard'' in order to avoid scientific evaluation of everything and anything, seems to border on a certain level of irresponsibility.  Rome is burning, in this case, literally, some American cities are in flames and Dr. Fauci seems to be obsessed with rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

With all of the consequences that the United States and the world have endured over the recent period of a little more than six months, economic, societal and quality of life consequences, we believe, it is not too much to ask, to expect better than that.

The Corona Virus. Scientists and Virologists

We recently wrote a few comments and expressed some opinions regarding Dr. Fauci.  Lately, Dr. Fauci has been gasping for oxygen in the room, as nobody is paying much attention to what he has been saying.  Once again, the Corona Virus epidemic is real, there have been many other real epidemics.  One of the things, we would argue, the major thing that makes the Corona Virus different, are the consequences which it has caused, starting with the now famous or infamous ,,Shutdown'' in the United States and numerous other countries as well.  Despite several ,,easings'' in various forms in different States and various countries around the world, the ,,Shutdsown'' remains real.  There are various consequences which can be directly and indirectly attributed to this ,,Shutdown.''  Unemployment, economic collapse or disruption, unrest, rioting and worse in the streets, not only in the United States but in other countries as well.  In the meantime, there is talk about ,,The New Normal'' whatever that is supposed to mean.

A little over six months ago, we had no idea who Dr. Fauci was.  Nor did we care.  We doubt that very many other people knew of him and that he would catapult to the pinnacle and be able such enormous and nearly absolute power in such a short time.

To be clear, Dr. Fauci did not start this.  The entire panic was started in great part by the now (in)famous Dr. Ferguson, in England, who predicted an apocalypse.  Dr. Ferguson was one of the first to brandish a new, or perhaps not so new style of elitism, where he promulgated rules regarding social distancing, masks and, of course, the infamous ,,Shutdown,'' while at the same time, flagrantly flaunting such rules.  He wore no mask in public, he had sexual relations for several days with his mistress, who is a married woman with children.  Dr. Ferguson was fired from his job, but it was too late.  The damage had already been done and Dr. Fauci picked up the ball from there and valiantly, some would say mercilessly carried it forward.

One of the things we heard from Dr. Fauci and hear continuously from others, is this business regarding listening to the ,,Scientists.''  However, anyone should know, ,,Scientists'' are not a monolithic group.  And then, it comes down to which Science.  And it further comes down to which Science over which Science.  Things are not so clear cut as Dr. Fauci and many others would have us believe.

One can look at statistics for guidance.  Of course, statistics themselves can be manipulated and they often are, but let us look for a moment at the American Government statistics.  These are for Corona Virus fatalities through 16 June 2020.  More recent figures should be and most likely are available; we do not think they would be that much different either for the United States or for other countries, for that matter.

Corona Virus Deaths

Classified by age, 80% of the Corona Virus fatalities have been people over the age of 65.  90% of the Corona Virus fatalities have been over the age of 55.  For infants or children, the numbers are extremely low, statistically almost insignificant.

Of course, every death matters, be it one of an elderly person and this writer is elderly himself, or that of a child or infant.  But one can at least keep in mind that most elderly people do not work, they do not teach schools and have less contact with the population than those who are engaged in daily active life.

But to put this into perspective, restricting social and economic interaction between people who are very unlikely to contact the Corona Virus and, if they are, would incur only minor symptoms...that should have been and still should be, and is, a matter which one should take into consideration.  ,,Touchless'' and ,,Contactless'' interactions seems to be practices which one should call into question.

But it gets worse.

Of all of the Corona Virus fatalities, 94% suffered from co-morbidities, meaning, theses people died due to a usually chronic and morbid disease which they had to begin with and the Corona Virus accelerated and, let us say, ,,sealed'' their fate.

Here, we must say, that drugs which are already available and which perhaps do not meet the ,,Gold Standard'' which Dr. Fauci desires, but maybe they meet the ,,Silver Standard'' or the ,,Bronze Standard'' have been frowned upon by individuals like Dr. Fauci and doctors (who, unlike Dr. Fauci, use a stethoscope every day) have often been reluctant to use them regularly, let alone aggressively.  We have mentioned some of these drugs in the previous post and they are well known and widely available; well, not all, those used in Japan nobody in the United States, at least, wants to even hear about.

But to postulate, as Dr. Fauci and others do, that a vaccine which is likely to be 50% effective, maybe even less effective, is going to make much, if any difference, in a disease in which 94% of the inflicted died from co-morbidities, that is a bit far fetched and we wonder, how ,,scientific.''

One can make a further calculation.  Currently, less than 200.000 people (and that is a lot, we know) out of population of more than 300 million succumbed to the Corona Virus.  That is something around 0,7% which may or may not be a lot.  But out of that 0,7%, 94% died because they had co-morbidities...that is something that we do not hear Dr. Fauci or anyone else talk about.

At the same time, regrettably, very, very regrettably, no one is talking anymore about how many people succumb daily from circulatory diseases, cancer and who knows how many other horrible diseases each and every day, month and year.

There is an anecdote, a proverb which one used to hear around Law School, intended to disparage bad lawyers and which went something like, ,,Before we start anything, let's shoot all the lawyers.''

Maybe one should consider the proposition, before really we do anything further in order to bring under control this Corona Virus, let's ,,lock down'' all the Virologists.

That Adorable Dr. Fauci

The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.  Dr. Anthony Fauci.  A little over six months ago nobody had heard of him, at least not too many people, we don't think.  Yet, almost overnight, Dr. Fauci has become not only a celebrity but a very powerful individual.  Although his power is somewhat on the vane lately, nonetheless, he commands tremendous authority.  He offers statements on most things that have something to do with the Corona Virus and also various things which, either directly or indirectly, are not related that much with the Corona Virus.

We thought it might be informative, and perhaps useful, to take a look at some of the things Dr. Fauci says, writes or thinks.

Historically, over the last six months or so, Dr. Fauci has expressed various, sometimes derogatory and sometimes contradictory opinions about numerous ways in which the Medical Community and others, have thought to seek solutions to treat or cure the Corona Virus epidemic.

To name a few, Hydroxychloroquine, no, it does not meet the Gold Standard.  Remdesivir, which has in the meantime proven to have several benefits in treating this disease, no, and then, when the drug was proven to work, silence.  Plasma, no.  The Japanese drugs which have been proven effective in treating the Corona Virus, Faviripiravir and Avigan, we think they are called..no mention, he doesn't even want to hear about them.

There are many indications that some if not all of the above drugs, and others, are at least partially effective, perhaps a lot more effective than Dr. Fauci cares to admit.  But when pressed about this argument, Dr. Fauci brings in his argument about the ,,Gold Standard'' which he says should be used in Clinical Trials and he, only he, decides when this ,,Gold Standard'' has been met.

Dr. Fauci also states that the Corona Virus is a serious problem.  We agree.  We wonder then, when a problem is as serious as he says it is, and it is, then, rather than doing nothing, why would not a ,,Silver Standard'' or even a ,,Bronze Standard'' be worth giving a try.  We also wonder why some of these drugs, notably Hydroxychloroquine, which has been around in Germany and elsewhere, under one form or another since 1933 and is considered to be an extremely safe drug to administer, suddenly is being called into question for numerous safety issues which nobody noticed for almost 90 years.

And if there is a ,,Gold Standard,'' a drug without side effects and without contraindications, we would like to know about it.  Not only for prescription only drugs but also over the counter drugs, such as Aspirin, which are contraindicated for some and can have side effects on others.

In the meantime, Dr. Fauci strongly urges the wearing of masks and lately, aviator goggles as well, as well as ,,Social Distancing'' a term which, we don't think existed before 2020.  These things may be effective.  Then again, they may be less effective than Dr. Fauci will have us believe.  But the question must be asked, why Dr. Fauci does not insist on his ,,Gold Standard'' for evaluating just how effective each one of these things are.

One must also question, how valid are some of these edicts proclaimed by Dr. Fauci.  They seem to resemble more the motto ,,Do as I say, not as I do,'' as he is often seen not wearing a mask, he contradicts himself on whether one should wear a mask or not wear a mask, he does not seem to be much into ,,Social Distancing'' and he certainly does not wear aviator goggles.  Dr. Fauci's counterparts and colleagues, notably Dr. Ferguson in England have been guilty of even worse.  Dr. Ferguson spent overnight time for several days with his mistress, a married woman with children, even though he had tested positive for the Corona Virus.  That would appear to be not only negligent, at best, but the pinnacle of irresponsibility, an act for which, mercifully, he was fired.

Dr. Fauci speaks about other things, too, personal sanitary habits which have been recognized since time immemorial.  But not too forcefully.  There seems to be evidence that personal sanitary habits can go a long way to arrest the spread not only of the Corona Virus but many other communicable diseases, but, that's not where his mind is at.

Dr. Fauci's mind is on a Vaccine.  That's the cure all, he wants us to believe.  Yet, looking at the history of Vaccines in general, while they are very useful and should be employed in all situations where possible, including the Corona Virus, no Vaccine is 100% effective.  Vaccines which are 80-90% effective are considered spectacular.  Elsewhere, earlier, we mentioned that a Corona Virus Vaccine, developed with such speed, might be 40% effective.  Recently, Dr. Fauci himself came out and said, he would consider it a success if a Corona Virus Vaccine would be 50% effective.  He did not explain how he would eradicate the Corona Virus with a Vaccine which is only 50% effective.

There are Doctors and Medical Professionals who have introduced the concept of Herd Immunity.  Italy was one of the hardest hit countries by the Corona Virus.  One must admit, if even grudgingly, that the Italian people, the Italian Medical Professionals and, above all, the Italian Doctors fought valiantly, against enormous odds and with extremely limited assets.  They used many of the drugs and treatments which Dr. Fauci expressed skepticism about.  They also carefully followed the concept of Herd Immunity.  Result?  There were 3 Corona Virus fatalities in Italy yesterday.  But Dr. Fauci wants to hear none of that.

One thing which should be mentioned, although it does not bear directly on the Corona Virus epidemic, or perhaps precisely because of that, is that people in Italy live longer than any other country in the world, except Japan.  And that may be due to a number of reasons.  But they also must and have darn good Doctors, not just Professor this and that at University that and the other, but everyday Doctors, who treat patients day in and day out in ordinary settings, in big cities, towns and villages.

Some people have been angered, very angered, by the New York State's actions of sending Corona Virus infected patients back into nursing homes, while, at least in New York City, two provisional hospitals provided by the Federal Government laid empty.  We did not hear Dr. Fauci calling into question that policy either.  Neither, whether by Dr. Fauci or anyone else, the idea of going in and disinfecting the entire New York City area of rats, including, probably, many hospitals, and washing down the streets regularly, twice daily, not only in New York City but elsewhere, too, as, incidentally, many Italian (and other) cities do.

So, where does all that take us?  It takes us to the national ,,Lockdown'' which in one form or another, is still in effect today.  And an argument can be made, or at least should be looked into, as to whether there is any causal relationship between this ,,Lockdown'' and the immense upheaval taking place in some American cities, by people, mostly young, black and white, men and women, even boys and girls; people who have lost their jobs, people who have been shut out of school, people where family life has been disrupted and upheaved.

If one looks at the history of the 20th Century, certainly one of the bloodier Centuries in the annals of history, not even Adolf Hitler, not even Joseph Stalin, leaders known for being capable of unspeakable cruelty, locked down their own population...which is to say, put their entire population under house arrest.  It is true, 2000 years ago, Emperor Nero, who has earned his rightful place in the annals of infamy, set fire to Rome, but even Nero, did not ,,lockdown'' the people of Rome into their own houses, before he threw torches on their houses' roofs to set them on fire.

Some people believe, the economic (and also psychological) effects of this ,,Lockdown''' are catastrophic.  People are without work.  Businesses are shut down along America's streets and elsewhere.  Hotels, airlines and restaurants have practically ceased to exist almost overnight.  And, of course there is a domino effect to this which we are seeing develop before our own very eyes.  Some have observed that the fall of Rome (caused by other factors) was followed by 1000 years of darkness. 

How President Trump as well as various other leaders of other countries were persuaded to follow such ideas as promulgated by Dr. Fauci and, not only by Dr. Fauci but many others, that is for future historians to figure out.

It appears very much, Dr. Fauci, a Doctor who has probably never treated a patient in his life for Corona Virus or for anything else, a Doctor who stated he does not know what therapy he would recommend if a member of his family became infected with the Corona Virus, has just been guessing at things.  Statistically, it should have been pointed to Dr. Fauci, who describes himself as a scientist, that someone guessing at things has a 50% chance of being right.  About the same as his Vaccine.  That may not be, that is not a very wise way to conduct public policy.

Lord Acton wrote, ,,Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.''  Dr. Fauci and others like him, were given, overnight, immense power.  The results of this, we are now condemned to endure.

An Unanswered Question regarding the Flynn Affair

A certain question has troubled this writer regarding the Flynn Affair.  To begin with, we would like to set aside the merits or demerits of the case, both sides.

The question has to do with listening in to the calls into or out of the Russian Embassy and, in particular, Sergey Kislyak's line.

This brings us to the telephone calls between Mr. Flynn and Mr. Kislyak.  This would have been accomplished in either of two ways, either tapping into the calls at the Russian Embassy or tapping into Mr. Flynn's telephone line.

Tapping the phone of the Russian Embassy.  One has to think about this.  It may well be possible and likely probable that the U. S. Intelligence Services have the capability to tap into the Russian Embassy phones, particularly Mr. Kislyak's line.  However, it is reasonable to assume that such a procedure would never be admitted to, because of huge possible repercursions.  A good number of years ago it was found that the Soviets (the Russians at that time) had installed microphones in the American Embassy in Moscow and they were probably listening to, well, to everything.  There was hell to pay by the Soviets at that time.  So, admitting that the FBI was listening in to the calls by tapping into the Russian Embassy appears to be out of the question, even if it is possible and even if it is true.

So then, that brings us to the second part of the dilemma.  Was the FBI listening to Mr. Flynn's telephone calls.  Because if it was, without some kind of FISA or some other warrant, the question is, on what basis or justification.  Of any American Citizen, of course, but even more so of the designated National Security Advisor to the incoming President.  Knowing precisely the answer to this question, and, in particular, who had authorized such a procedure, whether Mr. Comey, or higher (or lower), would seem to allow much light to be thrown on the Flynn Affair, especially now, where it has taken such a tortous course.

Dr. Anthony Fauci - or is it Hypocrisy?

We are wondering about the following today.  Why is total lockdown appropriate for everybody, or nearly everybody anyways, those of us who do not have special positions or titles, and only ,,Semi-Quarantine.'' whatever that means, for Dr. Anthony Fauci?

Actually, we are wondering, why does Dr. Anthony Fauci have to go into ,,Quarantine'' at all?

According to precedent, and precedent is important everywhere, including politics, not just in a Court of Law, should not Dr. Fauci follow the precedent sent by his illustrious colleague, Dr. Neil Ferguson, Imperial College Virologist in the U. K.?  Although Neil Ferguson was infected with the Corona Virus, he didn't see the need to follow any ,,Quarantine'' at all!!!  No mask, he got together with his mistress (not girlfriend, mistress...there is a difference) who is a married woman with children.  On you go Dr. Ferguson!  And on you go, Dr. Fauci, with your uniquely coined phrase of ,,semi- isolation!!!''

Two Questions about Hillary Clinton (9/11)

Regarding the recent news concerning Hillary Clinton's bout with pneumonia, there are two questions which have gone through this writer's mind:

1.  Why was Hillary Clinton wearing dark sunglasses throughout the period she was attending the 9/11 Memorial?

 

2.  If, it wasn't for someone named Zdenek Gazda, who shot the roughly 20 second long video showing Mrs. Clinton unsteadily leaning against a concrete pole, then stumbling and her knees buckling as she was literally carried into a vehicle, would we have even know anything of this had happened?

Politics, the Stock Market and Debt

Since January 1, 2016, the news from Wall Street has been discouraging.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down by something around 7% and the other indices have not performed well either.  Nor have other markets internationally been doing well .  Additionally, Wall Street did not perform well during the last two months of 2015 either.

During the earlier few years, as the stock indices kept pushing relentlessly higher and higher, there weren't too many who were questioning what caused such an unprecedented phenomenon.  However, now, as billions and billions get burned into ashes day after day, many are asking why.

There is one factor, however, which, to some observers at least, has not escaped consideration.  For years following the financial collapse of 2008, the Fed, the Federal Reserve Bank, had been pumping something on the level of $ 70 billion into the financial markets and the stock market, each and every month.  That, under a theory which Mr. Bernanke, the former Chairman of the Fed, called „Quantitative Easing,” whatever that means and something which President George H. W. Bush, the elder President Bush, may have called Vodoo Economics.  Some say the monthly amount by the Fed into the Financial Markets for years and years on end might have been less, some, maybe even more, but all agree that the amount of money pumped into the markets was enormous, beyond anything which one could possibly comprehend.

As we observed here a good while ago, to put this into perspective, $ 70 billion pumped into the financial markets every month would be the equivalent of giving, in cash, more than $ 17,000 each month to every man, woman and child in the United States.  That, most of us agree, is a staggering sum of money for years and years on end and, indeed, $ 17,000 in the hands of every living person in the United States, month after month after month, could have probably done as much, if actually not even much, much more (and more quickly) in pulling the United States out of the financial crisis which has been generously described as the Great Recession, which, we are not sure, is better or worse than a Small Depression.

The total sum of money which the Fed pumped into the markets is technically not part of the Federal Budget and did not have to be approved by Congress.  Technically, it is backed by securities of various sorts which have been purchased by the Fed but, which, if they decrease in value or fail, would create an additional debt incurred by the Federal Government.

It is relatively easy to see that, during this period,  except for the most inept, everyone made money on the Stock Market and other Financial Markets.  Perhaps it is not that much more difficult to see that once this money source dried up, the demand to buy securities, dropped correspondingly.

We all suspect, although no one knows for sure, that this extraordinary „Financial Tool” as former Secretary of the Treasury Paulsen, ex Goldman Sachs described it, ended sometime around November 2015; around that time and shortly before, the blame for the instability in Financial Markets was thrown on the Chinese; surely the Chinese bear some of the blame for what is going on but not all of the blame.

There is, however, a footnote to this which is particularly worrysome.  Currently the United States Treasury carries a national debt of something on the order of $ 19 trillion.  That, of course, is a staggering amount of debt; representing something like 20 years of Wall Street „Quantitative Easing.”   The Fed has been extremely careful in swapping these federal debt obligations for longer and longer terms, for up to 20 years, „locking in” near zero interest rates.  However, as the Fed has been forced to start inching up the interest rates, the new debt coming in from federal deficits (along with any other debt renewals has started inching upwards; this, in effect, accelerates the rate at which the national debt would increase, since none of the debt is being retired; actually, new debt has been piling up which, accordingly, would also have to be financed at the current and coming higher rates.

Mrs. Yellen, the current Fed Chairman has been trying to navigate through these treacherous and, one can even say, with much vigor and wisdom, although, regrettably, she has few allies; the current Federal Budget, not yet even agreed upon is in danger throwing the federal deficits into an even worse quagmire.

Considerations regarding Obstruction of Justice - President Richard Nixon and Democratic Candidate Hillary Clinton

During the famous Watergate Scandal, it became known, at one Point, that the White House had installed an elaborate System for recording numerous Conversations with President Nixon.  This Fact became known, almost offhandedly, when a certain Aide to the President, Alexander Butterfield, disclosed the Existence of the Contraption during a Congressional Hearing.

Obviously, a furious Battle thereupon ensued, to have the Recordings released and President Nixon, predictably, tried to do everything possible in order to avoid doing so.  The Issue was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court and the Ruling went against the President.

Interestingly, at some Point or another, or perhaps at more than one Point, President Nixon, who was also a Lawyer, considered „erasing” or „destroying” the Recordings.  Several of his Advisers, including James St. Clair, who was his Criminal Defense Lawyer, strongly advised him against doing so, because that would likely result in the President being accused and indicted on Obstruction of Justice Charges.  Nixon ended up not erasing the Tapes (except for the Mystery of an 18 Minute Gap which was supposedly and inadvertently erased by President Nixon's Secretary, Rosemary Woods).

We think it is possible to put these Events into Juxtaposition with both hypothetical and current Events.  Imagine yourself, imagine any of us, being in Posession of Evidence which we are asked to turn over to the Government, the FBI, any Federal (or lower) investigative Authority and refusing to do so.  Worse yet, imagine that we would have erased or destroyed such Evidence, either before or after we were asked to turn such Evidence over.  Any of doing such a Thing would find himself or herself in Front of a Federal Judge answering Charges of Obstruction of Justice so fast, it would make your Head spin.

But, and that is the interesting Thing, not Mrs. Clinton.  Mrs. Clinton erased (deleted, whatever) Records which arguably were Recordings of Federal Government Correspondence, some possibly classified, some not (certainly Mr. Nixon's famous „Expletive(s) Deleted” were not classified, although deleted)...and now, she maintains among other Things, that she is „sorry” but there is an Explanation for everyting...that she is not going to issue an Apology...that she is concerned about other „Things and Issues” as she pursues her Candidacy for the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States.

There has been one Incident after another, concerning both Mr. and Mrs. Clinton, we do not want to mention the salacious ones here...there have been those and there have been others which, at the very least, involved bad Judgment and, possibly or likely, worse.

And, technically, using the Rationale of „Reductio ad Absurdum” we can even assume for a Moment that they, in this Case, Mrs. Clinton has (have) done nothing wrong.  We can even assume that if Mrs. Clinton were to be dragged before a Federal Judge or Jury by the FBI and the Justice Department on Obstruction of Justice Charges, she would be found not guilty by a Jury of her Peers (or, perhaps, People of lower Stature than her).

We think such an Argument misses the Point.

Because, even in such a Case, the Question nonetheless remains, if this Country, at this critical Juncture in its History, confronted by a large Series of Problems which require not only good Judgment, Vision and Creativity...but also a Reputation and Integrity beyond Reproach...if this Country needs or wants a President who, Mrs. Clinton would argue, succesfully or not, is just on this Side of the Line of having done nothing illegal.

This is the Question which, ultimately, the Democratic Party would have to decide, irrespective of what Mr. Sanders is able to do in his Campaign and irrespective of whether Vice President Biden, who arguably may not have the intestinal Fortitude to endure an arduous Campaign, after the personal Tragedy which has beset him and, who, after all, is not young.

And if the Democratic Party decides that all this does not matter, then, even more importantly, this Decision, which is, it would seem, is not one to be taken lightly, would fall on the American People, whether to entrust the Destiny of coming Generations, the Destiny of America...into the Hands of Mrs. Hillary Clinton.

As Television Commentator Edward R. Murrow would have said (and most of us, admittedly, probably do not remember or do not even know who he was)...

One might call Tony Blair's Statement to be just plain idiotic.  But that would be generous, we think.  Tony Blair's Statement is just plain arrogant and it demonstrates the Irresponsibility which he displayed as Prime Minister, in embarking, along with George W. Bush into an Adventure in Iraq which cost, nobody really knows how much it cost, but to say that it cost in Excess of One Trillion U. S. Dollars would be by no Means an Exaggeration and, more importantly, which cost Hundreds of British Lives, Thousands of American Lives and Tens if not Hundreds of Thousands of Iraqi and other Lives.

If a lowly, inconsequential Employee at some non descript Fast Food Chain would have given to his Boss the Response which Tony Blair gave as an Excuse to Fox News, he would have been likely fired on the Spot and rightly so.

But Tony Blair's Fate is different.  He has been rewarded for his Irresponsibility not only by getting invited to countless Television and other Interviews, but also landing huge, huge Contracts which have earned him enormous Sums of Money.

Failure pays would be the Reductio ad Absurdum which Tony Blair's Case demonstrates.

The Runaway Money Printing Policy of the Fed(eral Reserve Bank)

Fresh on the Heels of the Government Shutdown and the painful Necessity to raise the Debt Ceiling a surprising but not unexpected Announcement from the Fed, in the waning Days of the Chairmanship of Mr. Bernanke:

Basically, the Fed, under Mr. Bernanke's Policy of so called „Quantitative Easing” just announced that will be pouring another $ 85 Billion into the Stock Market, buying Bonds, each Month, for the foreseeable Future, until at least March ofr 2014.  This is Money which is not reflected in the Federal Deficit and Money which the Government neither has, nor has authorized through Congress.  The Report further states and we are quoting here,

Wall Street had expected the Fed to refrain from tapering its so-called Money Printing Operation. (Emphasis added).

According, to The New York Times,on the other Hand,

The statement contained no surprises, and the stock market barely budged. The Fed was widely expected to continue adding $85 billion a month to its portfolio of Treasury securities and mortgage-backed securities, particularly in the aftermath of the disruptive partial shutdown of the federal government in the first half of October.

The Fed maintained a relatively optimistic economic outlook in the statement, released after a scheduled two-day meeting of its policy-making committee. It said the economy continued to expand “at a moderate pace” and that the availability of jobs continued to improve.

Now, as Mr. Bernanke prepares to clean up his Desk and leave his Office at the Federal Reserve, the several Trillion Dollars that he has spent, under this ill advised Policy will, of course, remain on the Books backed by Bonds.  What Kind of Bonds?  Goodness only knows.  It will be Mrs. Yellen's Job, presumably, to find out.

This stubborn Policy, pursued by Mr. Bernanke, to „Lift the Economy by the Bootstraps” under some strange Trickle Down Theory strongly reminsicent of „Reaganomics” has been conducted by Mr. Bernanke, if not singlehandedly, because he has had the Concurrence (although not unanimous) of the Federal Reserve Board Members, certainly without the Approval, Appropriation or even Advice of Congress nor that of the President of the United States.

It is true, that the Federal Reserve Board is supposed to function independently.  One wonders aloud, however, if under „independently” the Framers of the Law setting up the Federal Reserve Bank had in mind it spending $ 85 Billion per Month without any Accountability whatsoever.  No such Thing has ever been done by anyone else, anywhere, ever, with the one notable Exception of Vice President Cheney, who spent Billions on the War in Iraq, also without Congressional Approval.

It must be said, in Defense of Mr. Cheney, that the Sums of Money he spent pale in Comparison to the Amounts being spent by Mr. Bernanke.

This is also coming at a Time where incalculable Effort has been spent on showing that there has not been and there is going to be Little if any Inflation in the Consumer Price Index.

It would take too long to fully examine what that Statement is supposed to mean.  However, in Shorthand, it can safely be said that „No Inflation” means „No Inflation” except that certain Things are not to be included in the Equation, to mention a Few, Energy (Fuel and Utilities), Housing, Commodities (Food) plus a Couple of other Things here and there...

Even that Theory, as flawed as it is, has come under Scrutiny by the Mainstream, although many Economists have questioned ist Wisdom for a long Time.

Janet Yellen, the presumptive incoming Chair(wo)man of the Federal Reserves disagrees with Mr. Bernanke and believes that a draconian Control on Inflation (while notably excluding the Categories noted above and more) is not necessarily a beneficial Policy.

But the Consequences will be for her to sort out, once Mr. Bernanke leaves.

We are not sure where Mr. Bernanke is headed; Rumours have persisted and it appears that it is his wish to return to teaching at Princeton University; we simply don't know.  Earlier, we mentioned, we believe more than once, that President Woodrow Wilson (who was also President of his beloved Princeton University), may have rolled in his Grave (more than once) at the Thought of some of the Things that Mr. Bernanke did; to this, we need to add that he surely would have also scratched his head, if he would have been able to.

The Need for a Positive Approach to the Medical System in the United States

The First Thing that needs to be said here is that the Medical System in the United States does need to be drastically reformed.  It is the most expensive Medical System in the World and No. 2 does not even come close.  To make Things worse, someone who lives in the United States has about the same Life Expectancy as one does in Cuba, Way behind Places like Japan, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany or, say, even behind Singapore or Cyprus.

The Health Care Reform Act (so called „Obamacare”) is an Attempt at doing precisely that.  However, what started as a well intentioned and even noble Effort was deteriorated by Compromise after Compromise and became filled with Loopholes which, not unexpectedly, Health Insurance Providers are eagerly trying to exploit.

Just to set something in Perspective:  the United States has the highest paid Doctors in the World.  Many Doctors who graduate from Medical School in Foreign Countries, where the Cost of getting this Education is Zero or near Zero, trek over as soon as they can to the United States where they can earn 100 Times or 1.000 Times more than they can in the Country where they went to School, leaving their Governments angry at having invested in their Education but not being able to retain Doctors in their own Country, where they are so desperately needed.

Doctors are just one additional Problem.  Hospitals have in place Elaborate Systems to extract the Maximum possible Revenue not only from Insurers but from the Government as well, when providing Medicare or Medicaid covered Services.  Both the Government and Insurance Companies fight back.  Some think, Hospitals know how to outsmart not only the Insurance Companies but, more importantly, the Government.

If you are an Individual who would pay out of your own Pocket for Medical Care without having any Insurance, forget it.  The so called „List Prices” for Facilities and Services could be (and generally are) several Times higher than what the contracted Prices which the Insurance Companies or the Government pays are.

One Example that has been used alegorically over and over is the Cost of an MRI, which is the modern Version of a simple X-Ray.  Sometimes, just an X-Ray might suffice but, not surprisingly, Hospitals almost exclusively do MRI's which can be/are far more profitable.  Just how profitable?  The List Price for an MRI can vary, are you ready for this, anywhere from $ 800,00 up to $ 17.000,00 at some Hospitals.  And that, according to a recent investigative Report, for the same exact Procedure.

Ever wondered what an MRI costs in Germany?  We can end your Suspense:  $ 160,00.  France:  $ 160,00.  Italy?  $ 140,00.  Japan, which has one of the highest Cost of Living Indexes in the World?  $ 60,00.  All, using the same Equipment.  Now, an MRI is no indication of how long you are going to live but it can be more than a Coincidence that People in Japan live the longest followed by those in Italy.

There have been well publicized Problems with the Federal Government's Health Insurance Marketplace Website; These were not to be unexpected and certainly will be resolved, probably sooner rather than later.  The Problem, however, lies deeper than that.

Most People are clearly dissatisfied with the Situation as it currently stands and is developing.

The Question, we believe, is just what Kind of a Path is necessary to go forward, whether Congress, the Health Insurance Industry, Hospitals, Doctors and Health Workers want to hear it or not.  Health Care in the United States consumes, if one includes the Cost of Litigation (such as Malpractice) associated with Health Care to more than 18% of the GNP, a staggering Amount.  Even without the Cost of Litigation, it is in Excess of 16%.  Some sort of National or quasi National Reform which would include Coverage ensuring reasonably unform Health Care for all Americans is not only necessary, but also overdue, way, way, way overdue.  Bismark figured this out way back in the 1890's.  Every other industrialized Nation and many others in the lower Tier have some System to deal with Health Care for its Population in some Form or another.  There are Similarities as well as Differences between the Systems that various Countries use.  That is not only understandable but to be expected.

And, as President Obama stated (and conceded, although others did not), one must start from building by drawing on the System that is already in Place.

Looking at the American Precedents already in Place, why not keep everybody's Insurance where it is (which is what was originally envisioned), take all the uninsured under the Threat of a Penalty (as the Legislation does now) and throw them into a Medicare/Medicaid/quasi Medicare/Medicaid Program and then, based upon Verification of Employment or Self Employment, charged them a Premium based on Income/Ability for Coverage.  Then take the Insurance Premium which would be actuarially appropriate for that Individual and throw it on an Insurance Company based on a statistical Pool.  Insurance Companies which throw Individuals out of their Plans hoping to cash in on the Bonanza, would be discouraged in doing that because all that would happen to those Cases is, the Government would turn around and throw the Policies back at them through this Assigned Risk Pool and charge the Premiums which should prevail; they would be the same or lower as what the Individuals would have had under their previous Plan, since the Insurance Companies would try to change the Insurance Plan only for those who they thought they could get more Money from.

Bottom Line, except for General Rate Revisions (which is not what one should be talking about right now), all Insurance Health Insurance Policies which are already in Place, should not be changed based on „Technicalities” (Change in Provisions, number of Insured Covered and so on).  This, however is not what is happening right now and, some say, 14-18 Million Americans could be either left without Health Coverage or be forced to pay significantly higher or exorbitant Rates or, worse, be thrown out of the Insurance Pool altogether.  This is the very opposite of what the Law is trying to accomplish.

Another Thing that would resolve the Mess (this, based on Systems used in other Countries); if you are unemployed (with insufficient Assets), then the Government picks up the Insurance Premium until you are re-employed; if you are married, then the whole Family is covered under the Premium, even if Wife (oops! Or Husband)/Children are unemployed/not working and if your Wife/Child/ren seek/obtain Employment, they do have to pay their Premium and so do you.  Translation:  everybody working pays a Premium and everybody not working has Insurance based on working Family Member(s) or the Government.  Retirees would continue to get Medicare as they currently do.  Medicare Part B is already based on Ability to pay, since the Cost incurred by the Government per Beneficiary is $ 400,00 or so.  Most pay $ 100,00 or so but, even if on Medicare and having Part B, if someone has or is making abover certain Thresholds, they have to pay more, up to the entire $ 400,00 or so.  Finally, for Retirees, the Concept that Medicare Part A is paid 100% by the Government for all, then Medicare Part B is paid partially by the Government for most and that, regardless, on Top of that, one needs still additional Insurance in Order to reach a Deductible Level which they can afford...well...that sounds, no it doesn't sound, it is a Can of Worms in which Doctors, Hospitals, Clinics and Insurance Companies only see Billions and Billions of Dollar Signs.

 

Finally, someone woke up and removed the Cap on the Medicare Tax.  That is a good Thing.  Currently, however the Medicare Tax Rate is 0,9%.  Why the Medicare Tax Rate (which is supposed to cover  Medicare Costs on a current Basis...those working today pay for the Health Care of Retirees) does not even come Close to covering what it costs the Government to provide Medical Care to Retirees defies Credulity.  Keep in Mind, this is just to draw a Parallel on Priorities, The Fed(eral Reserve Bank), (Mr. Bernanke), is spending $ 82 Billion a Month (a Figure not included in the Federal Deficit), simply for his Quantitative Easement Theory (he would call it a Policy), the only tangible Result of which has been to propel the Stock Market (Dow Jones) to over 15.000 Points.

 

 

Armed Guards...Everywhere?

Recently, we wanted to mention something when several People got shot somewhere...where was it?  It is easy to begin losing Track.  Then, 13 People, including the Killer, got shot and killed at the Washington D. C. Navy Yard.

The Situation in some distant Places is also dire.  60-70 People died over the Weekend at a Shooting in a Mall in Nairobi, Kenya and it is not over yet.

Schoolchildren got killed.  Innocent People got shot at in Public Parks or, in some Cases, worse yet, killed, in Chicago and elsewhere.  An Arizona Congresswoman got horribly injured and several innocent People around her got killed in a Shooting.  People got killed while matching (albeit a violent) Movie in Colorado.  Students shot Students in Schools.  Some got caught in Time but others didn't and they wound up killing their fellow Students.  We could go on and on but it is not necessary, we don't think.

In the Middle of all this this comes Wayne la Pierre; he is the Leader of the National Rifle Association; with a Suggestion:  place more Guards, more „Armed Personnel” as he put it under the Scenario, „Arm more good Guys to Keep the bad Guys at Bay (or simply shoot them, we surmise)”

Aside from what we think are the obvious Problems with that Line of Thinking, we see another Problem; we are wondering if Mr. la Pierre and others see the Problem too.  There used to be a Time when everything, well, almost everything, was easily accessible; Government Offices, Courts, Schools, Hospitals, Airports and more.  All this has changed now, of course.  What makes it particularly worrysome is not necessarily those who live and work in these armed Fortresses, but those who have been left outside.

Ordinary Citizens.  Be it in an Automobile, on the Street, in a Shopping Mall, even in a Home or an Apartment.  Clearly, there simply isn't enough Money, either in the United States or elsewhere to have Guards everywhere.  The logical Conclusion of such an Argument, ad Absurdum, would be to have almost as many Guards as People who Need to be guarded, Police and quasi Police everywhere.

All Firearms are by Definition deadly.  Having a Pistol for Self Defense or a Rifle for Hunting are Rights protected by the Constitution.

However, allowing the Citizenry to posess sophisticated automated or semi automated Weapons which have clearly been designed for Warfare, for Conflicts between States, in the Hands of everyone is simply bringing Warfare into our Cities, Communities, Places of Work, Places of Worship, Places of Entertainment, on Streets and Parks, everywhere.

And while Mr. la Pierre (and others) may think it is a swell Idea for a whole Bunch of „Good Guys” to posess such Kinds of Weapons, meanwhile, countless Individuals who are simply going about their ordinary every Day Business, who do not own such Weapons, who may not want to own them, who may not have the Money to own them, who may be too old or too young to own them, are simply unwitting Targets for an incredible Carnage which is taking place in Front of our very Eyes.

Syria -- a difficult Choice

So, now, Syria has come to the Front Burner.  A Friend who wondered what would be the correct Choice on Syria also expressed the Inclination that to strike might be the preferred and logical Alternative.

It is a difficult Choice.  However, it does not appear that all of the necessary Variables of the Equation are available in order to make a correct Decision.  It might be appropriate to list just what the available Information is, at this Point in Time.  It also needs to be emphasized that the Information which is available, classified or not, is subject to re-Evaluation, literally, at a Moment's Notice as more Information becomes available.

Here is what we see so far:

The United Nations

It is clear that an International Intervention against Syria, limited or otherwise, is not possible within the Framework of the United Nations.  Russia and China are against a Security Council Resolution authorizing such Action and both have Veto Power.

This makes problematic any Action outside of the Scope of the United Nations, because such Action would be taken precisely because Approval cannot be obtained in the Security Council.  Simply put, one cannot easily make the Argument that the United States would go to the United Nations seeking Approval of such Action and, absent such Approval, it would act outside of the Scope of the United Nations or within another Framework or Coalition.

United States Domestic Policy Considerations

President Obama has set a courageous and correct Precedent by going to Congress to ask for Approval of a contemplated Military Strike.  We discussed the Implications of the Policy in an earlier Article.

Approval in Congress may be difficult but, it may prevail.  Straws in the Wind seem to indicate, however, that there might be some tough Sailing ahead.  Senator McCain, an outspoken Hawk in favor of Intervention, confronted some tough Questions at a Couple of „Town Meetings” which he has just held.  Polls seem to indicate that the Population as a whole is opposed to Intervention, limited as the President said it would be, by something around 48 to 28%.  There is a strange Coalition, composed of Liberal Democrats and Conservative Republicans which oppose Intervention of any Kind, leaving those who are in the „Mainstream” to carry the Weight and Responsibility for giving such Approval to the President.

The Situation in Syria

No one, including the Syrian Government disputes that they posess Chemical Weapons.

Less clear it is who used these Chemical Weapons in the latest Incident in which, according to credible Reports, approximately 1.400 People were killed, many of them, Children.  Truly a horrendous Act.  Some have suggested that the Rebels may have captured some of these Chemical Weapons and used them deliberately in order to entrap the Assad Government.

The United Nations Inspectors' Report will be available shortly and will become an important Factor if it corroborates the Intelligence Reports obtained by the United States establishing that the Assad Government used these Chemical Weapons against Civilians.

Even if the Rebels are aided as a Result of these contemplated Military Strikes, it is by no means a foregone Conclusion that Rebels associated with al-Qaeda or other Fundamentalist Movements would not inordinately benefit from them.  Interesting is the Position taken by a Veteran French Diplomat in an Open Letter to the French Parliament:

The Allies

Crucially important are the Allies who would be participating and/or supporting such Strikes.

So far, they are Canada, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and France.  After Canada, however, Things get murky when analyzing these Allies.  Saudi Arabia, which has Regional Political Considerations, that is one Thing.  Turkey which has been an arch-Enemy of Syria and would like nothing more than to have Syria destroyed, is another.  France; France has just announced that they will wait for the United Nations Report which seems to be an eminently sensible Thing to do.

Notably not joining in such a Coalition are Countries which normally can be counted upon:  Germany, Japan, Italy and, most importantly, the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Cameron's Motion to join in such a Coalition was voted down by Parliament, putting his Government on a rather shaky Footing.

The Damage in Syria has been done.  There may be more Damage done if there are no Strikes.  However, the Likelihood appears to be that there will be more Damage done even if there are such Strikes and that Prudence and Patience are the best Choices as the Order of the Day.
